Dodge played for keeps in 1968, creating an incredible drag-racing package that mated Dart GTS vehicles with the fearsome 426 Race Hemi. Offered here is a wonderful homage to that time, one that features many of those same changes, but with modern upgrades. Underneath the expansive hood scoop is a worked 426 Hemi engine featuring the cross-ram intake and dual Holley 4-barrel carburetors. Not simply for looks, this induction combination was uniquely suited for the Race Hemi environment, designed for “sonic tuning” to cram fuel into the cylinders. It is detailed with Mickey Thompson cast valve covers, factory-design carburetor air horns, an aluminum radiator and Hemi orange paint. Just like the original Hemi Darts, this car has headers, but it is also equipped with street-muffled dual exhaust. The automatic transmission is floor shifted, but in this case, it is backed up with the rock-solid Dana 60 Sure Grip differential, normally found in the 4-speed versions. The car now features 4-wheel disc brakes with Wilwood calipers, another significant improvement from circa-1968 construction. The originals were delivered in primer; this car is stunning in rich black with factory-style white longitudinal striping using specially placed Hemi-decal callouts. For 1968, Dart models retained the crisp shape of solid power, and the grille featured a look that was easily identified to that year only. Inside, this car has the lightweight-style seats, Stewart Warner auxiliary gauges, floor shift, column-mounted tachometer, GTS pedal dress-ups, and radio- and heater-delete plates. The finishing touches are chrome Strange Engineering 5-spoke wheels with narrow front tires and sticky Mickey Thompson rear street slicks that complete the appearance of seriousness. Detailed throughout, this car showcases the era of the factory race wars, and it leaves an immediate impression that it was built to take care of business.
