In 1964, Chevrolet had hobbled the Chevelle Super Sport by limiting output to 300 HP, then added the 327/350 HP L79 engine from the Corvette, but even that paled in comparison to Pontiac’s highly successful GTO. Then, in February 1965, Chevrolet General Manager Bunkie Knudsen announced the limited-production Z16, a fully optioned Chevelle SS with the hydraulic-cam version of the Corvette L78 396/425 HP engine down-rated to 375 HP. The die was cast, and in 1966 the Chevelle SS meant more than bucket seats and shiny trim; it stood for 396 cubic inches of big-block iron, pavement-rippling torque and unparalleled style. The Chevelle line was completely redesigned for 1966 along with the rest of the Chevrolet passenger-car lineup, sharing the full-sized Chevy’s forward-leaning front-end treatment and the shapely contours that departed from earlier models’ angular features. This 1966 Chevrolet Chevelle SS396 is a genuine Super Sport by virtue of its 138-code VIN. Produced at the Kansas City, Kansas, assembly plant, it was the recipient of a frame-off restoration to concours standards retaining the original sheet metal and utilizing NOS parts throughout. While not overly endowed with optional extras, it is a true head-turner in its arrest-me Regal Red and Black-vinyl bench-seat interior. Redline bias-ply tires on matching red-painted steel wheels and chromed dog-dish hubcaps lend an all-business touch to the look. The car’s 396/360 HP V-8 takes in fresh air through a rare cowl-induction system, and is mated to a Muncie 4-speed manual transmission. Optioned with a Soft Ray-tinted windshield, power disc brakes, dash-mounted clock, Delco AM radio and “knee-knocker” tachometer. This is a very sharp-looking first-year big-block Chevelle SS.
